Odour and Mould Removal
Cigarette smoke, wet dog, spilled milk, a musty smell that came with an import, or mould growing on the seats after a leak. We find the source, clean it out, then finish with an ozone treatment that breaks down the smell soaked into the fabric, headlining and air-conditioning system. No air fresheners, no perfume over the top.
In short: Details That Matter removes car odours and mould across Auckland with a deep interior clean followed by an ozone treatment. It costs $100 to $150 and takes 2 to 3 hours, and owner Josh Brits does the work himself, either at your home or workplace or at our Henderson workshop.
Most car smells come from something that has soaked in: smoke residue on the headlining, pet oils in the carpet, milk or food that ran under a seat, or damp that has turned into mould. Each one needs a different clean before the ozone goes in.
Before any work starts, Josh inspects the car and finds where the smell is coming from. That decides the quote, and it's why we don't sell odour removal as a fixed package.
Ozone is the finishing step, not the whole job. It can't remove a spill or a mould colony that is still sitting in the carpet, so the source comes out first.
We check the carpets and underlay, under the seats, the boot and spare wheel well, seat belts, door seals and the cabin filter. Damp carpet or a tide mark usually points to a leak.
Carpets and seats get hot-water extraction. Hard surfaces, vents and seat belts are cleaned, and the headlining is cleaned without saturating it. If the cabin filter is holding the smell, it gets replaced. This is the same process as our interior detailing, focused on the affected areas.
An ozone generator turns oxygen in the air into ozone (O3) and fills the closed cabin with it, with the air-conditioning running on recirculate so it reaches the vents and ducts. Ozone breaks down many of the molecules that cause smells on the surfaces it reaches, and with the air-conditioning on recirculate it gets into the vents and ducts too. It is much less effective on anything buried deep in seat foam or carpet underlay, which is why the physical clean comes first.
Once the treatment is done, the car is opened up and aired out before it's handed back. If any smell is still there, tell Josh rather than waiting for it to fade.
Auckland's humidity makes mould in cars common, especially in winter. It grows wherever moisture is trapped: carpet underlay, seat fabric, seat belts, door seals and boot linings. Mould spores can trigger allergies and asthma, so a mouldy car is worth sorting properly rather than masking.
Visible mould is cleaned out first, and that physical clean does most of the work. The ozone treatment is a finishing step for the musty smell that's left. Badly stained fabric may not come back to perfect, and we'll tell you that before we start.
Mould needs water. The usual culprits are worn door or boot seals, blocked sunroof drains, blocked drains under the windscreen, and a carpet that got wet and never dried. If we find where water is getting in, we'll show you. The leak itself needs fixing by a mechanic or glass specialist; otherwise the mould returns, however well the car is cleaned.
Cars that sit for long periods are at risk too. Josh's guide to how Auckland's climate affects your car covers mould on seals and trim.
Ozone is a lung irritant, so nobody, people or pets, is in the car while the generator runs, and the car is aired out before you drive it. We keep treatment times controlled, because long, high-dose ozone exposure isn't good for rubber seals and some interior plastics. It's a professional treatment, not something to leave running overnight.
Odour and mould removal costs $100 to $150. Where it sits in that range depends on what's causing the smell and how far it has spread: a musty smell from a damp mat is a much smaller job than years of cigarette smoke through the whole cabin. Josh confirms the price when he quotes, and quotes are free and no-obligation.
If the car needs a full clean anyway, odour treatment can be added to an interior detail or a full grooming package. Smoke removal is already part of our interior work.
Odour and mould removal takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on how strong the smell is. Josh confirms the time when he quotes.
You can book it at your place or drop the car at our workshop. Josh comes to your home or workplace anywhere in Auckland with water, power and the ozone generator on the van, or you can drop the car at Unit 4B, 50 Keeling Road, Henderson. We cover Auckland Central, North Shore, West Auckland, East Auckland and South Auckland. Read more about how mobile detailing works. Smell in the house as well? We also do house odour and mould treatment.
A spray and a cardboard tree hide a smell for a week. Getting rid of it means finding where it lives, cleaning that out properly, then treating what's left. That's how we approach interiors on everything from family SUVs to collector cars.
Find and remove the source first, then treat what's left. We extract the carpets and seats, clean the hard surfaces and vents, replace the cabin filter if it's holding the smell, then run an ozone treatment to break down the odour that has soaked into the fabric, headlining and air-conditioning system. Air fresheners only cover a smell up.

Yes. Visible mould is cleaned out of the carpets, seats, seat belts and trim first, then the cabin gets an ozone treatment for the musty smell that's left. If water is getting in, we'll show you where we found it. The leak needs fixing, otherwise the mould comes back.
In most cases, yes, with extraction, a cabin filter change and ozone. Heavy smoke from years of daily smoking sometimes can't be fully removed, and we'll tell you upfront if that's likely.
